Dealing with Dry Cracked Heels

Dry cracked heels are a common complaint we see here in our Redlands podiatrist clinic – especially during these colder months.

And while it might just start as a bit of flaking or rough skin, catching on your microfibre sheets or the carpet as you walk around the house, it’s an issue that can quickly escalate. In more severe cases, cracked heels (also known as heel fissures) can deepen, become painful, and even bleed.

It’s not just a cosmetic concern either; deep cracks may increase the risk of infection if left untreated. The key is seeking treatment well before it gets to this stage!

Who is most at risk of dry cracked heels?

Although dry heels can affect people of all ages, they’re more frequently seen in older adults. That’s because our skin tends to lose moisture and elasticity as we age.

But anyone can be affected, particularly during winter when cold weather and indoor heating reduce humidity and strip the skin of moisture.

Standing for long periods, wearing open-back shoes, or going barefoot may also be contributing factors.

How to treat dry cracked heels at home

  • Moisturise: Apply a generous amount of thick moisturiser to the affected area twice daily. Look for one that contains skin-softening agents like glycerol, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acid.
  • Exfoliate: Soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes daily, then pat dry and gently exfoliate using a loofah or pumice stone to remove dead skin.
  • Apply Petroleum Jelly: Before bed, apply petroleum jelly (or an oil-based cream) over the dry areas, then put on cotton socks. This helps lock in moisture and promotes healing while you sleep.

Prevention is key

Taking good care of your feet may help stop dry skin from becoming a bigger issue. Make it a daily habit to:

  • Wear enclosed, supportive shoes
  • Use gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin
  • Avoid harsh soaps or excessively hot showers – instead, wash your feet in warm water with a moisturising cleanser, like QV Intensive Moisturising Cleanser
  • Moisturise your feet with a good quality heel balm or foot cream
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Watch for any signs of infection as this may require medical attention

When to see a Podiatrist

If heel cracks become painful, show signs of redness or bleeding, or aren’t improving with at-home care, it’s worth booking an appointment with an experienced podiatrist at Trevor Lane Podiatry.

At Trevor Lane Podiatry, we regularly assist people dealing with dry, cracked heels. We take a thorough, personalised approach – considering factors like your footwear, skin condition, circulation, and lifestyle.

Your treatment for dry cracked heels may include:

  • Debridement (safe removal using sterile tools) of dead, thickened, or damaged skin
  • Recommendations for suitable moisturisers or other products
  • Ongoing foot care advice to help reduce the chance of recurrence
  • In more serious cases, we may prescribe medicated treatments to support healing
